“I hope my memoir provides the ‘you’re not going mad’ that I could have done with”

“A Mum Like This was born in the same week as my baby. I wrote poems during night feeds to capture everything I was afraid I’d forget. The startle reflex. That dough-like salamander body. Are those tiny arms made from chipolata sausages?

Once I emerged from the newborn haze and began to unravel my postpartum identity, I uncovered a rarely-discussed side to motherhood that isn’t so sweet and sparkly. Mum-shaming. Postnatal depletion. Motherhood meddlers…

As I I began exploring these topics through prose, my humble poem book metamorphosed into A Mum Like This – a memoir that navigates the often contradictory world of modern motherhood. Now, each chapter is tied up with a poem; one for each week of my first postpartum year.

While writing this book, I met a network of women who grappled with many of the same things as me – it’s just that we were all too depleted to speak about them in the early days. So, if you’re a mum like this, I hope my memoir provides the “you’re not going mad” that I could have done with.”
